I’m in Amsterdam for the week and I have my rental vehicle for the next four days. It’s got a 7 speed manual gearbox and easily maintains about 15-20mph without much effort. Front and rear brakes stop my speed demon with ease and the audible warning device rings loudly. Should be fun and hopefully it doesn’t get stolen, but who knows considering this is Amsterdam. But I paid the extra 10 euros for the week to have theft insurance so I almost wish it does get taken, makes my insurance purchase worth it! Hah but it’s a bit of peace of mind either way. Here’s what I’ve seen so far.
I didn’t bike to the beach nor the windmills, those were a train trip. But I am biking today to see Murder Castle or whatever it actually is in Dutch. But I like calling it Murder Castle instead because that sounds sweet. Surprisingly it's not raining but I did get hailed on the other day. So we shall see if the weather holds out this week.

Welcome to the Netherlands! Enjoy your stay. If you want to check out another old city center in the vicinity of Amsterdam I can recommend Haarlem or Leiden (I currently live in the latter)

We stopped by haarlem yesterday on the way back from the beach, we had the Amsterdam and region train tickets so it was nice to hop on and off in towns like that. Definitely enjoyed lunch there and the vibe of that city was way cooler than Amsterdam!
Definitely thinking about checking out Leiden at some point this week if it's not too far a bike ride. Although I'm pretty sure it's easier to just take the train over there.

Absolutely agreed. The cathedral in the town square was a surprising thing to come across too. That city felt like I was back in Siena in Italy again!

Yeah Haarlem has a very nice vibe.
Leiden is a bit far to cycle, so I’d recommend the train. It’s about a 30 minute ride depending on where you get on.

If you ignore changing trains at the train stations and visits to the airport, it’s the same for me.
There are so many other interesting cities in the Netherlands. Many within an hour of Amsterdam. Yet, most tourists only visit Amsterdam...

It’s like every where else; try to avoid the tourists traps as much as possible.
In the Netherlands it’s similar; you fly to Amsterdam, maybe visit a museum or two in Amsterdam that are truly unique and travel to another Dutch city from there.
